Me operating a gun

Today started out like any normal day here during the winter months: windy with the sun covered by dark clouds.

From my dark bedroom, I could see the light coming through the blinds and when I opened the window, because you can do that in winter here, I did not feel or hear any wind.

Because it was a nice day, I felt I would message my new friend to see if he wanted to go out and do some exploring of the city. It was a couple of weeks ago that we met at the bus station, both mutually heading in to the city. When we got to talking about how was not from here, he offered to take me on some trips to go see different sites in and around Auckland (5 million people, so a large place). He told me to go over to his place and we will go.

I got outside and it was not a particularly nice day. Note to self: next time walk outside before saying it is a nice out. Either way, we still went out to go site seeing.

We drove out to Devonport, a subdivison on a headland of Auckland, to Fort North Head. North Head has two fortifications that I went to: north and south. The gun in the picture is at the south fortification. We walked around and could see beautiful scenes of the city. I saw the fortifications that were in place, including the disappearing gun. The mountain, formed by a volcano, had many tunnels carved out in order to protect the Auckland harbour from attack (Russians or Japanese). It was really good to see, listen, and read about the history of these mountains (hills to Canadians, mountains to Saskatchewanians). I have put some pictures up and are in my gallery.

We drove around the coastal areas of Auckland and saw the different beaches. They are not terribly busy at the moment, being that it is winter, but there were people and the beaches looked nice regardless. I have some more areas to go and see on some free nights or weekends. So there will be more pictures to follow. Sorry for not adding more about the history of the names and such, but I am all researched out for now.
