Day 17 - Kiwis

Whenever I am talking about my experience here in New Zealand I always seem to be saying there has not been a Kiwi I hadn't liked. I wasn't like I am naive enough to think all people in a culture or society are all nice and never get emotional, it's just that I have yet to meet one. However, give me two weeks and I can find someone that is not up to par.
I almost got hit by a car today. I was walking along on the sidewalk when a car pulled up right in front of me coming out of a parking lot. I kept walking seeing as he couldn't turn out anyways. The car kept pulling out and I had to stand on my toes and push the car to keep my momentum from going forward into the car. The car kept going too. Didn't even try to stop.
But that wasn't a Kiwi i don't like. That was a normal jerk move, but there are many explanations of why the person may not do that normally and today was extraneous.
The individual I did meet that I didn't like was actually my room mate here (I have always had at least on problem living with room mates in all of the places I lived, except one). As it turns out, he often would hit his girlfriend and act very controlling over her (she was my room mate as well). I never actually encountered him being mean to her, but I have heard her crying and accounts from my landlord. To top it off, when my landlord found her with a bloody nose and lip, she was taken out of the house by her parents to the police department. Good news is she left him and moved out. He was subsequently kicked out as well.
It was none of my business really, but I talked to her about her future and how great it is to have support. She is only 18 years old and has her whole life ahead of her. She did not need to be in this poor relationship. It turns out he had priors for his aggression, so hopefully he learns to control his aggression and become a more respectful person.
It's not always and exciting day doing research, but it certainly increases the probability of one.
